Titanic Telegram

Arthur Claude Orchard or “Curly”, as he was affectingly known set out on foot as usual on this cold morning of the 17th April 1912 towards Bembridge. The Marconi telegram he was carrying was sealed and thus he had no understanding that the momentous contents would enlighten the family of the managing director of the Wight Star Line of the disaster that had beheld the Titanic and the fact that their son Bruce Ismay was alive and a survivor.

Ismay the writer of the telegram – who was later dubbed the Coward of the Titanic – had to be treated with opiates to help him cope with the shock of the sinking.
Ismay was the managing director of White Star Line and he was depicted in the 1997 Kate Winslett movie Titanic encouraging the liner’s captain to go faster.

He later told the official enquiry into the disaster that he had to turn and look away in the lifeboat at the moment the Titanic sunk at 2.20am on April 15.
On the 17th April 2012, Nigel Bennett will be re-enacting his grandfather’s walk from the Marconi Radio Station (Culver Haven) at the top of Culver Down, Brading to that of Graylands, being the home of the Ismay family in Bembridge on the 17th April 1912.

Nigel’s mother remembers her telling him that there was great consternation as ‘Curly’ waited for a reply. The exact telegram delivered has been lost, however only recently has a very similar one as seen below, been auctioned for several thousand pounds in New York.

Difference Between a Guest House And a B & B

There are many excellent options of accommodation types available on the Isle of Wight. This impressive choice caters for all tastes, demands and budgets. What is the difference between a guest house and a B & B? Well, usually the guest houses are bigger; consequently they provide accommodation in addition to just a bedroom such as a lounge and perhaps a communal bar. Also guest houses are often able to offer more services and comfortable facilities than their smaller B & B ones competitors.

For instance, B & B include only breakfast while guest houses can supply evening dinners and frequently have as already suggested a licensed bar. Usually like any other type of accommodation guest houses are charged with a local star system rating from one to five. The gradation scale is based upon quality of service and hospitality, the level of cleanness, the excellence of supplied meals and whether or not an en-suite bathroom is available.

St. Leonards for example is a typical Guest House situated in the charming and scenic area of Shanklin town. This family run accommodation welcomes you to their business and will make you feel comfortable as if you were at home. Christina and David invite you to enjoy your British holiday in this picturesque surroundings and friendly atmosphere. You have will have a wonderful opportunity to combine many relaxing pastimes with an excellent Guest House service. Last year St Leonards was awarded 4 stars by the Visit Britain team. The Island is an ideal place for cyclists and walkers to enjoy relaxing experience during their days out and about. There are about many hundreds of miles of magnificent walks around the Island and if you are a passionate golf player, you can check the visitors play days on one of the seven major Golf Courses on the Island.

A Day Out- Donkey Sanctuary

There so many articles written about the Isle of Wight. Even those holiday- makers that had never stepped this island can feel like that they made a trip to this island by reading any of them published items. But there is always another story to tell, today I will draw your attention to wonderful story of the Islands own donkey sanctuary.

The donkey sanctuary is situated between Shanklin and Ventnor, on the road to Wroxall. The history of the sanctuary is as follows, set up in 1987, the main motive of its establishment was to help and support donkeys that were either left over`s from the days when they were being used as beach attractions or as an unwanted child`s seasonal present.

These nice and cute animals need people`s assistance. They are so lovely and defenseless. In some cases they are suffering and in distress. I think that every human being`s mission on this Earth is to help animals if they possibly can.

What are the reasons for these donkeys ending up in the sanctuary? There are various causes as already described why donkeys find their way into the sanctuary. Often a donkey suffers from a malady or disease and will need professional treatment, this is not cheap and if they have not been insured may well just end up being neglected by their owners. Eventually the owners throw in the towel and either call the RSPCA or the sanctuary direct to see if they can help. This and many other reasons are why these donkeys end up entering the sanctuary. In the sanctuary they can find care, feed, warmth and love and they have never turned away a donkey in need.

Often people say that donkeys are stupid a bit and stubborn. I can say that it is completely the wrong view. Those people who do not know these nice animals and who find them obnoxious express opinions like this.

A male donkey is called jack and female one is a jenny and in reality donkeys are very sensitive and gentle animals. They are very good natured creatures that are prepared to work very hard given the right encouragement. They love visitors and children and like very much to interact with the public, if the public are nice to them. In bygone years the donkey evolution and progress meant that they have lived with people and worked with them as companions for centuries, often they were very badly treated but still remained friendly to people. The sanctuary donkeys obviously have no great workloads and spend most of their days frolicking and pandering to the public` s attention. It is a great fun for the whole family, especially for children. Together they will have a good time and pleasant interactive communications often take place.

If you are pet lover, then you will have wonderful pastime in the donkey sanctuary. Here the animals live, breed and grow in beautiful natural surroundings. Here you will have an opportunity to communicate with these nice animals as well as enjoy picturesque scenery. I can say that one or two hours out with donkeys provide you with as unforgettable holiday experience. It is well worth taking time out to visit the donkeys! Choose a wonderful day with sunny weather and enjoy a day out with donkeys. Your children will be grateful to you for such a wonderful surprise. If you want to spend your weekend near the donkey sanctuary, you can rent a suitable Isle of Wight accommodation in Shanklin or Ventnor.

By the way, you can buy Christmas Cards with donkeys on. Making your small contribution to the donkeys assists the overall continuation of the sanctuary and the card will remain as a nice memory about your trip. Support these animals of inquisitive nature and gentle spirit!

Parks of The Isle of Wight

What is would you say was a super and great pastime for both adults and children alike? Immediately holiday time together comes to mind as it is the most favourite and lovely pastime for any family to enjoy on an annual basis. We all love having wonderful times with our dear ones and close friends. The grown-ups can have a drink and relax while the children enjoy the many days away from school, having a super and nice time with friends and not just sitting in front of computer and playing electronic games, but walking and cycling, jumping around and generally having fun.

Where can you find such a nice place to relax and rest? Well may I suggest you try the beautiful and green Isle of Wight. There is a great spirit on the Island brining enjoyment and service to its visitors is one of the main thrusts of the many tourism businesses. As well as this the traveler will notice immediately that the pace of life changes as soon as you cross the Solent and set foot onto the Island, it’s a magical place of beauty with the most splendid scenery. I would like to provide you with some information on a few of the main attractions and parks on the IOW. Your children will find that there are many things to do and see within them.

One of the popular attractions on the IOW is Dinosaur Isle- an Interactive dinosaur museum.

This park is located in Sandown. It is a really nice and stunning area, where you can see and play with Interactive displays, large fossil collections, alongside is an extensive gift shop, this is an all weather attractions and is open all the year round. You can have a walk into past and then back to future, contemplating the history and development of the civilization of dinosaurs that lived 120 million years ago. There is also a great collection of all kinds of dinosaurs fossilized remains.

Their sizes will surprise you as they are their natural size which means BIG! Do not be scared as they are just skeletons, but very, very long ago a world of dinosaurs ruled the Isle of Wight.

The next attraction and park is Robin Hill Country Park.

Set in picturesque country side, it is an ideal place for children’s parties and the playing of games. There are five new woodland gardens to rest in and explore so something for the whole family. Here you have a great opportunity to see and take pictures of the rare red squirrel. This is great fun for the kids as squirrel spotting can take many hours of hunting to find the right picture,. It is a real fun for kids!

The thirds alternative is Fort Victoria to the West of the Wight, situated on the north side of the Solent. Here you can see the following attractions, the Marine Aquarium, and Archaeology Exhibition, Planetarium and Model Railway. Again I t is an opportunity to combine leisure time with super educational themes. It is a very good place to view vintage boats and ships in action as the views across the narrow straits between the Island and the mainland is narrow and very busy. After having a super walk you can have lunch at Verdi’s Cafe.

Here are just some parks and attraction options found on the Isle of Wight. However, there is a great amount of Isle of Wight attractions. Choose whatever you want and have a great day out! IOW Tourism welcomes you!

Bestival 2009 is Here!

Hello, my dear people and visitors of the beautiful Isle of Wight. We are glad to welcome you once again to one of the most exciting calendar events of the IOW. The Bestival is greeting you! I would like to provide you with a super short review of the things you must know about and can do when visiting the Bestival.

The Bestival is held from 11th to 13th of September, 2009.
What is this Bestival anyway? It is a 3-day boutique music festival celebrated in a very picturesque and wonderful Island setting. This so called a natural Garden or Eden Robin Hill is the perfect place where this event can be held. A green and flourishing park situated in the heart of the Isle of Wight (in between Newport and Ryde) and again this year it is glad to open its doors to one and all. How did it start? The Bestival was born out of Rob da Bank’s visionary ideas. He is a famous British disk jockey and still active to this day as a DJ and Radio 1 presenter. The Bestival brings a lot of positive impressions, emotions and fun things for “joe public” to see and do. What is the mission the Bestival? I think that the main mission or reason for the Bestival is to bring music culture of all genres and styles to the wide public. A great spread of music is performed during three days in open air! I guess that you would call it a really great episode for civilization and art. The Bestival is a realised dream that come true due to the efforts of Rob da Bank, his wife- Josie da Bank and co- partners of John and Ziggy.

In my humble opinion, the Bestival is an ideal vision of how modern festivals should look; it is a bright and shining example of tolerance and vitality.  This represents and demonstrates the real magic of music with an orgy of colours which for a few days in September spread themselves over the shores of the Solent.

A little bit of history…The very first Bestival was held in September, 2004. And it was a successful start to a long held vision. Meanwhile the years have passed and each Bestival in turn has left a unique an exceptional track in people’s memories. Since the beginning a tremendous amount of local and well established artists, singers, bands and performers have entertained their capricious public with their music. This year the stage presents the likes of Kraftwerk, Massive Attack, MGMT, Fleet Foxes, Seasick Steve, Klaxons, Soulwax, 2 manydjs and Bat for Lashes.
If you feel like fresh air and adrenalin you enjoy camping then pack up your tepee roll up your sleeping bag and come along.  It is a fun pastime for teenagers and young people alike and I have even seen people of older persuasion enjoying them! However, if you like comfort, you can easily search for a suitable accommodation on the Isle of Wight, near Newport, Ryde or Cowes. The Bestival is a very kid-friendly, so children are very welcome and well catered for as there are many interesting things for them to do. They will love it, you will love it as it is just a great experience and fun thing to do over a late summer weekend in September.

Bestival Fire Works
The Bestival is massive musical event and is one for the record books you cant really imagine the experience, you have to be there!
Over the years it has gained many the UK Festival Awards. It is a storming adventure for your brain, and a flight of fancy for your soul. Discover yourself! Why not dress up for the fancy dress ball, be crazy live life and enjoy the wonders of the Bestival.

Cowes-Torquay-Cowes racing, Bestival and International Charity Classic Car Extravaganza

While having a splendid vacation on the seaside, taking the rays and tanning nicely you are more than likely very relaxed and in joyful mood, however you may now be looking for some new and excitement that can satisfy your soul aspirations.

As the days grow shorter the “tanning season” is drawing to a close, but you can still have great fun visiting the Islands thrilling boat races for example.

The Cowes-Torquay-Cowes powerboat race is a big event held from 28th to 30 August this year, 2009. Around  80 craft are going to participate. As you can see by the name the main race starts and finishes in Cowes – the marine capital of the Isle of Wight. This event is organized and supported by the British Powerboat Racing Club (BPRC). Cowes-Torquay-Cowes is considered a very serious and challenging offshore race and not for the weak of heart. Do try and get down to Cowes or along the foreshore as it’s a great and thrilling site to see these thunderbirds of the sea thrash their way forward at super speeds it’s a really thrilling weekend pastime.

Set up in the leafy surrounds of Robin Hill Countryside Adventure Park you can and will have a crazy and wild time. The Bestival is a 3-day boutique music festival supported by Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank. It is a multi award-winning event  producing fun and quirky pastimes for all its visitors and guests. On top of which you will discover the many and varied kinds of music genre, plus many attractions, bars, cocktails, circus and acrobatics performances, all wait to entertain and captivate you. This year’s line-up includes Kraftwerk, Massive Attack, MGMT, Fleet Foxes, Seasick Steve, Klaxons, Soulwax, 2manydjs and Bat for Lashes. Lest not forget the wonderful dressing-up theme as this is always widely embraced (this year the theme is Space, the final frontier!). Further attractions include the Come Dancing Spiegeltent and the Bollywood Bar so be there or be square!. In total, over 600 cars and other vehicles are expected to feature, including a large contingent of Minis (in celebration of the model’s 50th anniversary) and a number of Rolls Royce Silver Ghosts. The event starts at Newport Quay on Saturday and moves to Ryde Esplanade on Sunday. Make sure to take your camera with you as it’s a fabulous time for posing with the car of your dreams. We wish you a great time and lots of happy memories and pictures.

Walking Around The IOW Can be Very Inspirational

The Isle of Wight is an obviously in my eyes a very nice island. I think that most people would agree that a pleasant and pleasurable walk around the island can be most exhilarating. There are many such lovely places on the isle where you can gain an inspiration from nature, so it is rather a challenge to choose just one. The whole isle is set in very picturesque landscape, which is why many people like to stroll it around. So, it is up to the individual as to what direction and track to plan.

You can have a nice walk on a flat a planned flattish route, in the forest, along the Solent, or hike in some of the more rugged heights or even surf on a board in waters around, honest it is also a walk only a marine one! Also if walking has taken its toll you can always just drive around the all Isle of Wight, staying at some interesting towns and then walking to the alluring historical or natural places, I would say masterpieces of extraordinary beauty in many cases.

From my point of view, I want to say that it is an exciting trip around the island, and you should try it, as the impressions it leaves are just marvelous. Walking is a very wonderful thing as you often begin to look at the same thing you pass every day in a car quite differently. You start to feel the breath of nature, the spirit of history taking in the ambiance and atmosphere of the location. It is really rather different thing when you feel the energy of the place… It is a splendid inspirational way of looking at life in the slow lane of one foot in front of another. Why is the Island so attractive? Every season offers something very new and interesting.

You can often visit familiar places to you and they will look different season to season. You will notice new and fresh details and peculiar features. This again can be very attractive because you can often catch something very special that never happens or will return again.
